AsMogadishu, (SONNA) – A historic election agreements have been reached by the Political leaders in Somalia on May 27, 2023.
There will be one person, one vote election from next year, and the elections will take place once every five years.
In this new agreement, there will be single constituency, proportional representation closed list electoral system.
Somali leaders have agreed to abolish the Premier post which was a closed election (parliament electing the presidents). There will be a Presidential system. President and Vice President will be elected directly by the people on a single ticket. (Current President’s term ends May 2026).
The country will only have two political parties which will compete democratically for the people’s vote.
Unified election schedule for regional elections. First popular local council elections nationwide including Banadir (Mogadishu) will take place on June 30, 2024.
Regional parliaments and regional leadership elections to take place on Nov 30, 2024,
