Mogadishu, SONNA – The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia convened an emergency meeting on Sunday night to approve the establishment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. This landmark decision, led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, aims to strengthen Somalia’s democratic institutions and ensure transparent electoral processes.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, a constitutional body, is tasked with overseeing elections at all levels of government and implementing credible and transparent electoral practices. The commission’s mandate is central to Somalia’s efforts to restore and uphold the people’s right to freely elect their leaders through One-Person One-Vote elections nationwide.
In his address during the meeting, Prime Minister Barre highlighted the Somali government’s commitment to fostering democracy.
