DOHA – The Somali Finance Minister, Mr. Biixi Iimaan Ige, who is visiting Qatar, met with his Qatari counterpart, Mr. Ali Bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, on Thursday in Doha. The two ministers discussed various issues related to the economic development of Somalia, including the plan for financial reform, strengthening the economic cooperation between the two countries and the debt relief issues that are now reaching a critical stage.

The meeting was held at the Qatari Ministry of Finance and was attended by senior officials from both sides. The ministers also exchanged views on the regional and international developments and their impact on the economic stability and growth of Somalia.

Mr. Ige praised the Qatari government for its continuous support and assistance to Somalia, especially in the fields of infrastructure, education, health and humanitarian aid. He also expressed his appreciation for the Qatari role in facilitating the debt relief process for Somalia, which will enable the country to access more financial resources and opportunities.

Mr. Al-Kuwari reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to stand by Somalia and support its efforts to achieve peace, security and prosperity. He also commended the Somali government for its achievements in implementing the financial reform and improving the public financial management system.

The two ministers agreed to enhance the bilateral cooperation between Somalia and Qatar in various sectors, such as trade, investment, energy, agriculture and tourism. They also agreed to hold regular consultations and coordination on issues of mutual interest.

The Somali Finance Minister also held separate meetings with the heads of the financial and economic institutions of Qatar, such as the Qatar Central Bank, the Qatar Investment Authority and the Qatar Development Fund. He briefed them on the latest developments and challenges in Somalia’s economy and invited them to explore the potential opportunities and partnerships in Somalia.

Mr. Ige is on an official visit to Qatar as part of his regional tour to mobilize support for Somalia’s economic recovery and development. He is expected to meet with other Qatari officials and representatives of international organizations during his stay in Doha.
