Kampala, (SONNA) — The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Uganda has, for the first time in history, officially hosted a ceremony commemorating Somalia’s Independence and Unity Day, marking the unification of the northern and southern regions of Somalia on July 1, 1960, and the founding of the Somali Republic.
The celebration, held on July 1, 2025, was organized under the leadership of Somalia’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Fardowsa Mohamed Qanyare. The event drew a diverse gathering of distinguished guests, including diplomats from other countries, members of parliament, Somali community leaders in Uganda, business figures, intellectuals, youth, and women representatives.
During the event, attendees were treated to a rich cultural and historical program, featuring tributes to Somalia’s independence struggle, patriotic poetry, traditional dance performances, and speeches delivered by embassy officials and invited guests.
In her keynote address, Ambassador Fardowsa Qanyare emphasized the significance of the day to all Somalis, underscoring the importance of unity, national identity, and the ongoing process of rebuilding a strong and stable Somali state. She called on the Somali diaspora to remain connected to their heritage and contribute to the country’s progress.
The Somali Embassy in Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Somali history, culture, and national unity through inclusive and impactful engagement with the diaspora. Hosting such a historic celebration marked a major step toward strengthening community bonds and inspiring younger generations to uphold the values of patriotism and national pride.
