Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia, in its regular session held tonight and chaired by H.E. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, formally approved the list of nine (9) candidates for appointment to the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC).
The nominations, submitted by the Minister of Family and Human Rights Development to the Council, followed a rigorous and transparent selection process conducted in full compliance with Articles 8, 15, 16, and 17 (1) and (2) of Law No. 16 of 27 June 2016, as the legal basis for the process.
The shortlisted candidates were selected on the basis of merit, integrity, and professional competence, and the process adhered to internationally recognised standards, including the Paris Principles and the GANHRI General Observations (Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions).
The endorsement of these candidates by the Council marks a significant milestone in the establishment of an independent national human rights institution in Somalia. It reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening human rights protection, advancing accountability, and promoting the rule of law across the country.
