Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has transferred $700,000 to the Awdal Drought Relief Committee to assist communities severely affected by drought in the region.
The announcement was made by SoDMA Commissioner, Mahamud Moalim, during a press briefing at the agency’s headquarters. He stressed that while the contribution is critical for immediate relief, it remains insufficient to meet the needs of the people of Awdal, urging for expanded support and stronger collective efforts.
The handover ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including:
- Minister of Public Works, Dr. Elmi Mahamud Nur
- State Minister for Security, Mohamed Ali Hagaa
- Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Bulaale
- Deputy Minister of Petroleum, Abdiwahab (Cananuug)
- MP Asha (Koos)
The officials welcomed the donation and extended special appreciation to the President, Prime Minister, and the Council of Ministers of Somalia for standing with the people of Awdal during this difficult period. They also praised the Banadir Regional Administration, particularly Governor Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), for contributing $200,000 in relief assistance.
This latest support follows a pledge of $500,000 recently approved by the Somali Cabinet for Awdal.
SoDMA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening nationwide relief efforts, engaging business leaders, religious scholars, and both local and international organizations to mobilize more resources for communities hit hardest by the drought.
