MOGADISHU – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has officially launched a new project aimed at rehabilitating and rebuilding the central food reserve warehouse in Mogadishu. This initiative is a strategic move to enhance the country’s capacity to store and distribute emergency food supplies, crucial for responding to recurrent humanitarian crises.
The project, which is fully funded by the Government of China, reflecting the deepening cooperative ties between Somalia and China. This development is part of broader efforts to strengthen SoDMA’s infrastructure and logistical capabilities. In a parallel effort, another food storage facility is also under construction in Las Anod, the administrative center of the North-Eastern regional administration.
Dr. Ahmed Abdi Adan, the Deputy Commissioner of SoDMA, officially inaugurated the project in Mogadishu. The new and renovated warehouse is expected to significantly improve the agency’s ability to provide rapid relief during times of need, ensuring a more effective and coordinated humanitarian response across the nation.
This initiative highlights a concerted effort by the Somali government, with international support, to build long-term resilience and establish robust mechanisms for disaster preparedness and relief. The completion of these facilities will mark a powerful stride toward a more secure and responsive food security system.
