Mogadishu, Somalia – Mr. Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), today hosted Ambassador Jamal Mohamed Hassan, the Head of IGAD Headquarters for Climate Adaptation and Environmental Protection, at SoDMA’s offices.
The high-level meeting delved into comprehensive discussions on strengthening cooperation between the two organizations in the critical areas of disaster management and building resilience to the impacts of various calamities.
A significant point of discussion was the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of recommendations stemming from the 2023 El Niño Impact Assessment. Somalia holds a unique position within the IGAD region, being the only country to have conducted such a comprehensive assessment of the El Niño phenomena.
Furthermore, both Commissioner Abdulle and Ambassador Hassan concurred on the imperative to expedite the disbursement and implementation of financial assistance designated for flood and drought relief efforts across Somalia. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the country’s capacity to respond effectively to climate-induced disasters and safeguard vulnerable communities.
