Kuwait City, SONNA – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA), Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, held high-level meetings in Kuwait with key representatives from the United Nations and the Arab States Office to discuss collaborative efforts in disaster risk reduction and response.
During his visit, Commissioner Abdulle met with Kamal Kishore, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Marwa Nora Achkar, Head of the UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States. The discussions focused on enhancing coordination between SODMA and international partners to improve Somalia’s capacity to respond to natural disasters and mitigate their impact.
The meetings emphasized the importance of accelerating the implementation of Somalia’s National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction. Both sides agreed to strengthen their partnership and support initiatives aimed at building national resilience and reducing vulnerabilities to disasters.
Commissioner Abdulle highlighted the Federal Government of Somalia’s commitment to aligning with international efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and response capabilities. “Somalia is dedicated to working closely with the UN and other partners to build our capacity to manage disaster risks effectively. This collaboration is crucial to safeguarding our communities and ensuring sustainable development,” he stated.
The discussions also explored ways to leverage regional and global expertise to address the unique challenges Somalia faces, including recurrent droughts, floods, and other climate-related disasters. The UNDRR and Arab States Office reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s efforts, pledging to provide technical assistance and resources to bolster disaster risk reduction initiatives.
