Mogadishu, Somalia – SONNA – The Commissioner of Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moalin Abdulle, met today with the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Wang Yu, in Mogadishu to discuss enhanced collaboration on disaster resilience, humanitarian aid, and infrastructure development.
The talks focused on China’s potential support for critical projects, including flood preparedness, water and sewerage systems, dam construction, and the drilling of water wells to improve access to essential services. Commissioner Abdulle emphasized the urgent need for investment in long-term resilience to mitigate the impact of recurring floods and droughts in Somalia.
“China has been a reliable partner in Somalia’s development, and we seek to expand this cooperation to strengthen disaster response and community resilience,” said Abdulle. He highlighted the importance of capacity-building for SoDMA staff, donor reserve mobilization, and improved resources for efficient relief operations.
Ambassador Wang Yu reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s humanitarian and development efforts, stating, “China stands ready to assist Somalia in disaster management and infrastructure projects that will benefit communities and enhance stability.”
The meeting also explored avenues for increased Chinese investment in Somalia’s disaster preparedness programs, aligning with broader efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.
This engagement shows growing bilateral ties between Somalia and China, particularly in addressing climate-induced challenges and improving livelihoods.
