On 1st February, the Federal Government of Somalia and the United States of America jointly coordinated a military operation that had targeted senior ISIS leaders in Bari Region of northern Somalia’s Puntland State.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud acknowledged the unwavering support of the United States in the fight against international terrorism and welcomes the continued commitment under the decisive leadership of President Donald Trump.
This latest operation reinforces the strong security partnership between Somalia and the United States in combating extremist threats.
Somalia stands on the cusp of a transformative chapter in its history. Over the past two years, a relentless multi-pronged offensive against terrorism has reignited the nation’s hope for peace, security, and prosperity. Under the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has rallied its people and forged alliances that have dealt devastating blows to the militant group Al Shabaab, and other extremists groups signaling a decisive shift in the nation’s fight against terror.
A Nation United Against Terrorism
For years, Al Shabaab, also referred to as ‘Kharijites’ – these enemies of the nation and its people – have wreaked havoc in Somalia impeding peace, security and development. But the people have arisen and said no more. They have displayed exemplary courage, putting the needs and interests of the nation ahead of their own.
The struggle against terrorism in Somalia is more than a military campaign – it is a call to action for every Somali citizen. President Mohamud’s administration has pursued an inclusive strategy, uniting the Somali National Army (SNA) with local communities. The formation of civil defense forces has empowered ordinary citizens to reclaim control over their villages and towns. By standing shoulder to shoulder with the SNA, these brave individuals have demonstrated that the strength of Somalia lies in its people and that citizens have what it takes to shape the destiny of their country.
International allies have also rallied to Somalia’s cause, providing much-needed military aid and conducting precision airstrikes to eliminate key terrorist leaders and decimate their operational bases. This has greatly weakened the militants’ ability to launch fresh attacks. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud’s declaration of total war against Al Shabaab and other terrorist groups in June 2022 marked a watershed moment. The number of attacks has reduced tremendously. Mogadishu, once a target of regular attacks, now enjoys a semblance of peace that would have seemed unattainable just a few years ago. This is what happens when a nation dares to dream and acts with conviction.
Key Territories Reclaimed
The victories on the battlefield are tangible. Vast territories that were once under the grip of Al Shabaab have been liberated. Towns and villages in Jubbaland, Galmudug, HirShabelle, and Southwest states now bear witness to the resilience and determination of Somali forces. Even in Puntland, where the Daesh terrorist group (ISIS) once sought to establish footholds, the tide has turned. This progress is a powerful reminder that fear is no longer Somalia’s master. Images of liberated towns and fallen insurgents serve as a testament to what can be achieved when a nation refuses to bow to its enemies. Citizens, regardless of clan or political affiliation, are now united under one banner: The fight for Somalia’s freedom and future.
A Future of Hope and Reconstruction
These victories are not an end but a beginning. As Al Shabaab’s hold weakens, the doors to national recovery and reconstruction continue to swing open. Millions of Somalis in the diaspora now have the opportunity to return home and contribute to rebuilding a nation that is on the rise. A stable Somalia will not only benefit its citizens but also serve as a cornerstone of peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa and contribute to global peace and security.
The international community has taken note of Somalia’s progress. The lifting of the arms embargo, the establishment of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), and the reduction of African Union peacekeeping forces reflect growing confidence in Somali leadership. The message is clear: Somalia is ready to stand on its own.
A Vision for a Better Tomorrow
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s vision is one of hope, progress, and inclusivity. He dreams of a Somalia where robust, democratic institutions thrive, where citizens have a voice, and where peace is not just a possibility but a reality. He sees a future where Somalia can be a prime investment destination of choice. He looks forward to Somalia taking its righful place in the Horn of African, African and global space. His administration has shown that even the most entrenched challenges can be overcome with unity, determination, and bold action.
But challenges still remain. Those who profit from Somalia’s instability will seek to undermine progress and claw back on gains made. They will argue that the road ahead is too steep, that the nation is not ready. To them, we say: Somalia is stronger than your doubts. The people of this great nation have endured decades of hardship, and they will not be denied their rightful future.
The fight against terrorism is about more than security – it is about reclaiming Somalia’s destiny. Together, as one people with one purpose, we can build a nation that thrives in peace and prosperity. Somalia’s brightest days lie ahead, and the world is watching as we rise. Let us all, at home and abroad, unite to finish this journey. The future belongs to Somalia, and the time to claim it is now.
