Mogadishu(SONNA)-Puntland State on Monday morning held local election in Qardho, Eyl and Ufeyn towns, as over 30’000 people registered to cast votes in 54 polling station, SONNA reported.
Puntland electoral commission said that a total of 449 candidates will contest for 87 local council seats
” I have cast my vote in Qardho. Today is the begining of returning power to the people to choose their political representatives and determine their future. This is a vital milestone for Puntland and Somalia, engaging citizens in Puntland on one person, one vote”, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni said in twitter post.
Somali leaders and observers welcomed the historic election in Puntland State today, noting that well-prepared election commission is leading the process.
Executive Director of Heritage Institute for Policy Studies, Prof. Afyare A. Elmi was among observers staying in Qardho and tweeted the post blew.
The result of the on-going election is expected to come out tomorrow on Tuesday.
