Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving universal suffrage elections during remarks delivered at the Europe Day 2025 commemoration in Mogadishu.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Hamza praised the European Union’s long-standing support to Somalia in areas such as security, economic development, humanitarian aid, and state-building. He emphasized that the EU’s partnership has been marked by tangible actions—from demining operations and police training to road construction and educational support—calling it “true friendship.”
The Prime Minister highlighted Somalia’s democratic progress, referencing decisions from the recent 11th National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting. He stated that the government is laying the groundwork for inclusive, interference-free elections, affirming, “Our goal is a one-person, one-vote system—there will be no more indirect elections. The Somali people will decide their leadership.”
