TANGIER, Morocco – The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, continued his official working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco today with a strategic tour of the Tanger Med Port, currently ranked as the largest port in Africa and the Mediterranean.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Prime Minister Barre inspected the facilities of this global logistics hub, which serves as a vital artery connecting trade routes across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The port’s significance is underscored by its handling of over 20% of global commercial shipping traffic, positioning it as a cornerstone of the world economy.
During the visit, the Prime Minister held a productive meeting with Mr. Mehdi Tazi Riffi, the CEO of Tanger Med Port. The discussions centered on strengthening port cooperation between the two nations, facilitating trade, and sharing expertise in infrastructure development. Both leaders explored avenues for Somalia to leverage Morocco’s extensive experience in managing world-class maritime logistics to boost its own economic infrastructure.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre emphasized that this visit aligns with his government’s priority to modernize Somalia’s economic foundations. “Our engagement here is part of the DanQaran government’s broader strategy to build essential infrastructure that drives national economic growth and to elevate the cooperative relationship between Somalia and Morocco,” the Prime Minister stated.
The visit comes at a time when Somalia’s maritime sector is witnessing significant progress. The ports of Mogadishu and Berbera have recently received international recognition for their improvements. The Federal Government is currently spearheading initiatives to modernize existing ports and is in the planning stages for constructing new, major port facilities to further integrate Somalia into the global trade network.
