TANGIER, Morocco – The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, delivered a compelling keynote address today at the opening of the 17th edition of the MEDays International Forum in Tangier, Morocco, outlining a bold vision for economic connectivity and technological sovereignty in the Global South.
Addressing an audience of world leaders, policymakers, and international delegates, Prime Minister Barre proposed the creation of an African-led Maritime Alliance connecting African nations with countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean. He emphasized that such an alliance would be pivotal in enhancing security and trade routes. Furthermore, the Prime Minister championed the establishment of a direct maritime trade corridor linking East Africa with Morocco, a strategic move designed to integrate the continent’s eastern and northern economies more effectively.
In addition to maritime strategy, Prime Minister Barre called for the establishment of a “Global South Investment Fund.” This financial mechanism would be dedicated to fostering development and infrastructure projects across developing nations, reducing reliance on traditional financing models that often come with restrictive conditions.
Touching on the future of technology, the Prime Minister advocated for the creation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Forum specifically tailored to the Global South. He stressed the importance of developing AI systems that respect and incorporate the diverse languages and cultural contexts of southern nations, ensuring that the technological revolution remains inclusive and equitable.
Prime Minister Barre, who is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, is among the key heads of state and government attending this year’s forum.
During his stay in Morocco, Prime Minister Hamza is scheduled to hold various sideline meetings with global leaders and dignitaries to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and advancing Somalia’s strategic interests on the international stage.
