Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, today officially inaugurated the National Cyber Security Center (SOMCIRT), a facility established to prevent, monitor, and respond to cyber threats targeting the country’s telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
The center is designed to strengthen Somalia’s capacity to respond to cybersecurity emergencies and safeguard sensitive information belonging to government institutions and the wider public sector.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre emphasized the growing importance of cybersecurity as the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology. He noted that the new center will play a vital role in countering malicious cyber activities and protecting national digital systems.
The Prime Minister described the establishment of the center as a major milestone in Somalia’s technological development, highlighting its responsibility to coordinate national cybersecurity responses, report and manage technology-related security incidents, and raise public awareness about cyber risks.
The initiative forms part of broader government plans to advance the country’s digital transformation and strengthen technological governance. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Somalia and the National Communications Authority Somalia for their role in developing the country’s telecommunications security framework and supporting the expansion of national digital infrastructure.
Officials stated that the National Cyber Security Center will serve as a central platform for coordinating responses to cyber incidents and ensuring the safety and resilience of Somalia’s growing digital ecosystem.
