Mogadishu, SONNA — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held pivotal discussions with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare, on Somalia’s ongoing security transition and the post-ATMIS mission, AUSSOM. The talks centered on strengthening cooperation between the Somali government, the African Union (AU), United Nations (UN), ATMIS, troop-contributing countries (TCCs), and international partners.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barre underscored the need for increased UN support to boost Somalia’s security and capacity-building efforts, as the country prepares for the transition to the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). He acknowledged the essential role played by the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) in aiding Somali Security Forces, particularly in life-saving missions and skill development.

Under-Secretary Khare praised Somalia’s upcoming seat on the UN Security Council for 2025-2026, expressing optimism about Somalia’s growing role in promoting regional and global peace. The dialogue reflects Somalia’s commitment to strengthening security and international partnerships as it enters a crucial phase of its post-ATMIS security framework.
