Prime Minister Hamsa Lays Foundation Stone for Modern Agricultural Center in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, SONNA – Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new, large-scale modern center owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation on Thursday.

The new facility is expected to enhance the ministry’s capacity to support farmers, improve food security, and drive economic growth through increased agricultural production. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Hamsa emphasized the importance of the agricultural sector in Somalia’s economy and highlighted the government’s commitment to revitalizing domestic production.

“The Ministry of Agriculture is being established to develop the country’s production, which plays a major role in our economy,” said the Prime Minister. He praised the construction of the modern center, stating that it will streamline services provided to farmers and the wider Somali community.

Addressing global challenges, PM Hamsa noted that climate change has severely impacted crop production worldwide, making it crucial for Somalia to focus on increasing its own agricultural output. “With the effects of climate change reducing harvests across the globe, we must prioritize strengthening our domestic production to ensure food security and economic resilience,” he said.

The new center is expected to serve as a hub for agricultural research, policy development, and farmer support programs, contributing to long-term sustainability in the sector. The project aligns with the federal government’s broader efforts to modernize infrastructure and reduce reliance on food imports.

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation expressed optimism that the facility will play a pivotal role in transforming Somalia’s agricultural landscape, fostering innovation, and improving livelihoods in rural and urban communities.

The ceremony was attended by government officials, agricultural stakeholders, and local leaders, who welcomed the initiative as a positive step toward Somalia’s economic recovery and self-sufficiency.
