MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – In a compassionate gesture of clemency, the Office of the Attorney General announced the release of 116 inmates from Hamar Central Prison and MBCC Prison in Ex-Control Afgoye. The prisoners, accused of minor offenses, have served the majority of their sentences and were granted amnesty by President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in honor of the Holy Month.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Farhan Hussein Mohamed addressed the freed individuals, encouraging them to embrace this second chance and expressing gratitude towards President Mohamud for his merciful decision. “This amnesty is a testament to our nation’s commitment to justice and rehabilitation,” Mohamed stated. “It’s an opportunity for you to reintegrate into society and contribute positively.”
The beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty, predominantly young individuals, had access to free medical care, educational opportunities, and recreational facilities during their incarceration. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Attorney General’s Office to safeguard prisoner rights and promote their well-being within Somalia’s correctional system.
The release of these prisoners is seen as a step forward in the country’s pursuit of restorative justice, offering a fresh start to those who have paid their dues to society.
