In a significant diplomatic meeting, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held talks with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Somalia, Ms. Catriona Laing. The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace, where they discussed crucial matters pertaining to the country’s development and the role of the United Nations in supporting Somalia’s progress.

The meeting commenced with President Hassan Sheikh sharing the government’s ongoing efforts to address key challenges, with a particular emphasis on security and economic recovery. He highlighted the importance of international support in combating terrorism and promoting sustainable development in areas affected by conflict. In addition, the President emphasized the pressing need to roll out basic services in the newly liberated areas, including healthcare, education, clean water, and infrastructure, to ensure the well-being and stability of the local population.

Ambassador Catriona Laing, representing the United Nations, expressed her gratitude to the Somali government and its people for the warm welcome extended to her. She commended the government’s achievements in combating extremism and restoring peace in the country. She underscored the United Nations’ commitment to bolstering collaboration and increasing support for peace, politics, and humanitarian assistance in Somalia.

Crucially, Ambassador Laing highlighted that the new mission would prioritize providing essential aid and support to those in need, particularly in the recently liberated areas. This would include the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance, aimed at addressing the urgent needs of the affected population.

The discussions between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ambassador Catriona Laing reflect a shared commitment to strengthening the vital functions of the United Nations Office in Somalia and ensuring the sustainable development of the country. The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding of the importance of continued collaboration and coordination between the Somali government and the United Nations to achieve lasting peace, political stability, and socio-economic progress.

As Somalia moves forward on its path to recovery, the support and engagement of the international community, particularly the United Nations, play a pivotal role in fostering peace, stability, and prosperity for all Somali citizens.
