Mogadishu (SONNA) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today officially opened the 7th Session of the 11th Federal Parliament of Somalia, commending the leadership and members of both the House of the People and the Upper House for the significant work accomplished during the previous sessions.
In his constitutional address to the lawmakers of both chambers, the President highlighted key national issues, including security, elections, infrastructure, and the overall progress achieved in the country. He announced that the number of teachers serving in schools will be expanded to 10,000 in order to strengthen the education sector.
“The number of teachers in schools will be increased to 10,000 to improve the country’s education,” President Mohamud stated.
Speaking on economic infrastructure, the President also revealed that Somalia will begin drilling its first oil well in the coming months, underscoring that the nation has reached a level of economic and security self-reliance.
The opening ceremony of the 7th parliamentary session was attended by the Speaker of the House of the People, H.E. Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), the Speaker of the Upper House, H.E. Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, Prime Minister H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, and members of both Houses of Parliament.
Speaker of the House of the People, H.E. Sheikh Adan Madobe, stated that this session will prioritize the review and completion of the constitution and other key legislations before parliament.
“The House of the People will focus on reviewing and completing the constitution and electing Somalia’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly,” Speaker Madobe said.
The Speaker of the Upper House, H.E. Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, also addressed the session, emphasizing the need to establish the Judicial Service Commission, the Constitutional Court, and to expedite the special status of Mogadishu as the capital city.
