Mogadishu, SONNA — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has addressed the nation on recent developments and the steps taken by the Federal Government to defend Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity, and political independence, including the decision to annul agreements with the United Arab Emirates.
In his national address, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud outlined the government’s rationale behind terminating its agreements with the United Arab Emirates, emphasizing Somalia’s sovereign rights and constitutional authority.
The President stated that Somalia had entered into agreements with the UAE in good faith, with the expectation of mutual respect and adherence to state-to-state relations. However, he noted that this trust was undermined by actions that did not reflect engagement with Somalia as a single, unified, and sovereign state.
“We entered into agreements with the United Arab Emirates in good faith, but the UAE did not conduct itself as a single, independent state in its dealings with Somalia,” the President said. “On numerous occasions, we urged them to treat Somalia as one country and to cease the covert approach of engaging through multiple channels, undertaking activities inside our country without the knowledge of the Federal Government.”
He added that such actions constituted a clear violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and national unity.
“These activities, carried out without the consent or oversight of the Federal Government, directly undermine Somalia’s sovereignty and nationalism,” President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said. “After extensive deliberation and careful evaluation, we were left with no option but to take the decision announced yesterday to annul the agreements we had entered into with the Government of the United Arab Emirates.”
The President reaffirmed that the Federal Government remains open to international cooperation based on mutual respect, transparency, and full recognition of Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and constitutional order.
He concluded by stressing that all decisions taken by the government are guided by the supreme national interest and the will of the Somali people to protect the independence and integrity of their country.
