Addis Ababa, (SONNA) — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today attended the inauguration ceremony of Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), alongside leaders from the region.
In his remarks, President Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed Somalia’s position that stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa can only be achieved through justice, fairness, and mutual respect among all countries sharing the benefits of the Nile waters.
“It is not about rejecting one another’s needs, but about finding a balanced approach that ensures fairness and respect for all. The countries along the river can only succeed if we act as one community, where no nation is excluded from progress, nor burdened unfairly,” the President said.
He reiterated Somalia’s commitment to working closely with neighboring and regional partners to promote cooperative use of shared resources, praising Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for bringing the GERD project to fruition.
The President emphasized that the true achievement goes beyond the completion of the dam itself, highlighting that it represents an opportunity for broader development benefiting the peoples of the Horn of Africa and the continent as a whole.
