Mogadishu, SONNA — President Hassan Sheikh Mahamud convened a crucial consultative meeting with the leadership of Somalia’s registered political parties today, reaffirming the government’s dedication to deepening democratic governance through the implementation of one-person, one-vote elections.
The meeting focused on reviewing progress and challenges in the electoral process, with President Hassan Sheikh highlighting the significant efforts made over the past two decades to enable Somali citizens to directly elect leaders who represent their will. He emphasized that completing the transition to a transparent and inclusive election system remains a national priority.
“The government is fully committed to finalizing a democratic election system based on the principle of one-person, one-vote,” the President said. “National consultations and political stakeholder engagement are key pillars to ensure an open and credible electoral process.”
Leaders of the political parties expressed appreciation for the government’s resolve and the progress achieved thus far. They also recommended expanding public awareness campaigns to ensure broad understanding and participation in the upcoming direct elections.
