Mogadishu, SONNA — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on Friday chaired a virtual meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC), held on January 24, 2026, bringing together the country’s top federal and state leaders.
The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre; the Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama; the President of the Southwest State, H.E. Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed (Lafta-gareen); the President of Galmudug, H.E. Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor); the President of Hirshabelle, H.E. Ali Abdullahi Hussein (Ali Guudlawe); the President of Northeastern Somalia, H.E. Abdukadir Ahmed Aw-Ali; and the Governor of Banadir Regional Administration and Mayor of Mogadishu, H.E. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab).
The Council discussed key national developments, with a particular focus on the Federal Government’s efforts to safeguard Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, address the ongoing drought, intensify the fight against terrorism, and accelerate local council and federal member state elections.
Following deliberations, the National Consultative Council reached the following resolutions:
- Affirmed full support for the Federal Government of Somalia in fulfilling its constitutional responsibility to protect the country’s sovereignty, dignity, and national unity.
- Commended the conduct of the Banadir Regional Council elections and the lessons learned from the process, and agreed to expedite local council elections across the federal member states.
- Welcomed the support of the Future Council and endorsed the invitation to the National Consultations scheduled to be convened by the Government on 1 February 2026.
- Praised the achievements of the Somali Armed Forces, in cooperation with the Somali people, in recent operations against the Kharijites.
- Called for urgent assistance to address the worsening drought situation affecting communities across the country.
- Expressed gratitude to the United Nations Security Council, the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and international partners for supporting Somalia’s right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to continued coordination and consultation in support of peace, stability, and democratic governance in Somalia.
