PM Hamza Barre Closes Heritage Forum in Dhusamareb, Announces Oil Drilling to Start in May

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre officially closed the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies’ Annual Forum in Dhusamareb today, using the platform to make a major economic announcement and reaffirm the Federal Government’s stance on national unity. Addressing the gathering shortly after his arrival in the Galmudug capital, the Prime Minister revealed that oil drilling operations are scheduled to commence within the region this coming May.

The Prime Minister described the current period as one of profound transformation for Somalia, citing advancements in security, economic development, and diplomacy. He pointed to the recent peaceful elections in the capital as a clear indicator of the nation’s democratic maturity, noting that citizens voted with confidence and security. Barre emphasized that these domestic and diplomatic strengths have enabled the government to successfully repel violations of Somalia’s sovereignty, expressing gratitude to international partners who have stood firm in supporting the nation’s unity and territorial integrity.

In a disclosure that signals a potential economic shift for the central regions, Prime Minister Barre announced that the extraction of hydrocarbon resources is set to begin in May of this year at a specific location within Galmudug. This development aligns with the government’s broader strategy to utilize natural resources for national reconstruction. However, he also addressed the pressing humanitarian landscape, acknowledging that nearly 4.4 million Somalis are currently affected by severe drought conditions, which requires urgent and sustained relief efforts.

On the political front, the Prime Minister issued a call for cohesion among Somali politicians, declaring that the government remains open to dialogue. He stressed that the “table of dialogue” remains open in Mogadishu but drew a firm line regarding national unity, asserting that the government and the public are united in preventing any attempts to divide the country. He reiterated that Somalia will not accept any action that weakens its sovereignty, though it remains ready for cooperation based on mutual interests.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Barre received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Dhusamareb from the President of Galmudug State, Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor), along with the Vice President, cabinet ministers, and diverse sections of the community. His visit was primarily to officiate the closing of the Heritage Forum, which this year focused on critical themes of politics, security, and the reconstruction of Somali government institutions. During his stay, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold meetings with the Galmudug leadership and community representatives to discuss peace and development.
