Bari, (SONNA) – Puntland’s security forces have killed more than 40 ISIS militants in the latest round of coordinated military operations in the rugged terrain of Togga Miiraale and surrounding areas in the Bari region, according to frontline military officials.
The offensive, part of Operation Hillaac, has been ongoing for over 24 hours in the Calmiskaad mountain range, targeting remnants of the ISIS-affiliated group who were hiding in natural fortifications. The Daraawiish forces recaptured key positions, including strategic command posts previously held by the terror group.
Puntland Defense Forces say the operation dealt a major blow to ISIS in the region, dismantling one of their most significant strongholds. “Our troops inflicted heavy losses and reclaimed important territory in Togga Miiraale. The area was one of the group’s final hiding places, and the battle marks a turning point in the campaign to eliminate them,” said General Mohamed Mohamud Faadhigo, spokesperson for Operation Hillaac.
In addition to the offensive, Puntland forces also foiled a planned suicide attack last night, which targeted a military base. According to officials, intelligence had already identified the attackers, allowing forces to prevent the assault.
Togga Miiraale, described as a difficult-to-access area with deep gorges, steep mountain ranges, and natural defensive structures, had served as a strategic ISIS hideout for years. The latest phase of the operation, military officials say, signals the near-complete dismantling of ISIS in the region.
“Togga Miiraale will become the final graveyard of ISIS in Somalia,” one commander declared, noting that the third and final phase of the operation is now underway to eliminate remaining elements.
