Mogadishu, (SONNA) – In a targeted security operation conducted last night in the town of Afgooye, Lower Shabelle region, the Gaashaan Special Forces of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) apprehended two Al-Shabaab operatives who had clandestinely entered the area. One of the suspects was a senior figure responsible for extorting money from civilians and businesses, while the second was linked to the group’s intelligence wing, tasked with gathering information on government forces and coordinating targeted assassinations.
The arrests come in the wake of a formal warning issued by NISA on July 20, which emphasized that the collection or payment of extortion money to Al-Shabaab amounts to terrorist financing — a serious offense under Somali law and international counter-terrorism frameworks. Members of the public, especially business owners, are once again urged not to comply with any financial demands from the group.
NISA calls on all citizens to promptly report any threats, intimidation, or extortion attempts to the relevant security agencies. The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to dismantling Al-Shabaab and ensuring the safety and security of the Somali people.
