MOGADISHU (SONNA) – The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) today announced a significant milestone in the country’s democratic transition, revealing that 923,220 citizens have successfully registered as voters in the Benadir region. These individuals are now eligible to cast their ballots in the upcoming election.
The NIEC confirmed that it facilitated this high registration turnout by establishing 56 voter registration centers distributed across the region’s 16 districts, making it easy for residents to participate in the process.
NIEC Chairman Abdikarin Ahmed emphasized that the country is scheduled to hold the election next month. He used the occasion to call for political organizations to be granted permission to conduct their electoral campaigns openly.
The current “DanQaran” administration has repeatedly pledged that the country will no longer be led by officials who are not directly elected by the public, underscoring the importance of this ongoing push toward universal suffrage.
