Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – Somali National Army (SNA) and local forces dealt a devastating blow to Khwaarij militants today, killing nearly 30 fighters, including key leaders, in a fierce battle across Middle Shabelle and Hiraan regions. The militants launched coordinated assaults on government positions but were met with overwhelming resistance, leading to a humiliating retreat.
Security officials confirmed that Somali forces, acting on prior intelligence, ambushed the attackers in Muqluga Ali, Ceelhareeri, Hareeri Madoobe, and Garas Magan, inflicting heavy casualties. Among the dead were senior Khwaarij commanders, dealing a significant blow to the group’s leadership structure in the region.
At least 25 bodies were left behind, with reports indicating that militants fled with additional casualties. Foreign fighters were also spotted among the attackers, indicating the group’s reliance on foreign fighters.
Defense Minister Ahmed Macallin Fiqi praised the troops in a statement, saying:
“We salute the bravery of the Somali National Army and local forces who crushed the Khawarij today, killing nearly 30 terrorists, including their leaders. This is a clear message: Somalia’s forces are stronger, and the Khawarij are weak.”
He commended the people of Hiraan for their resilience and called for continued unity against the militants, who have been attempting to regroup and launch fresh attacks.
The defeat marks another major setback for the Khwaarij, who have lost several strongholds in central Somalia due to ongoing military operations. Analysts say the death of high-ranking militants could disrupt the group’s operations in the region.
Military sources indicate that security forces remain on high alert, expecting possible retaliation. However, today’s victory strengthens the government’s momentum in its campaign to fully liberate remaining militant-held areas.
