National Electoral Commission Chairman Announces Progress Toward One-Person, One-Vote Elections

Mogadishu, SONNA – The Chairman of Somalia’s National Electoral Commission, Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, has expressed confidence in the country’s preparations for free and fair elections, emphasizing the public’s eagerness to participate in the democratic process.

Speaking to national media, Chairman Hassan highlighted the significant progress made in organizing the upcoming elections, which will mark a critical step in Somalia’s political development. He revealed that the commission has conducted extensive outreach, visiting most regions and districts across the country to engage with local communities and stakeholders.

“The public is ready to embrace and implement the one-person, one-vote electoral system,” Hassan stated. “People are eager to cast their votes and elect the leaders they want in power.”

The Chairman announced that local council elections are scheduled to take place in June this year, covering the south and central regions of Somalia. These elections are seen as an important milestone in the country’s transition to a more inclusive and democratic governance system.

Hassan emphasized the importance of ensuring that the elections are conducted transparently and fairly, with the active participation of all eligible voters. He reiterated the commission’s commitment to overcoming logistical and security challenges to deliver a credible electoral process.

The announcement comes amid growing optimism about Somalia’s political future, as the country continues to rebuild its institutions and strengthen its democratic foundations. The one-person, one-vote model represents a significant departure from previous clan-based electoral systems, aiming to empower citizens and enhance political accountability.

As the June elections approach, the National Electoral Commission is working closely with federal and regional authorities, civil society organizations, and international partners to ensure the success of the process. The upcoming polls are expected to set the stage for broader national elections, further solidifying Somalia’s path toward stability and democratic governance.

Chairman Hassan’s remarks have been met with widespread support from citizens and stakeholders, who view the elections as a critical opportunity to shape the country’s future and strengthen its democratic institutions.
