Mogadishu, Somalia – Demonstrating a commitment to international collaboration and urban development, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), the Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of the Benadir Region, recently held a pivotal meeting with Mr. Nasar Mohamed Alsanuusi, the acting Ambassador of Libya to Somalia. The discussions, which took place at the Benadir Regional Administration headquarters, focused on enhancing cooperation between the sister capitals of Mogadishu and Tripoli.
The primary objective of the meeting was to accelerate the implementation of existing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) that were previously signed by the Mayor of Mogadishu and his counterpart in Tripoli. These agreements aim to facilitate the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and best practices in urban governance, infrastructure development, and various aspects of municipal administration, recognizing the shared historical trajectories and contemporary challenges faced by both cities.
Mayor Muungaab, during the cordial exchange, commended Libya for its longstanding and unwavering support to Somalia, particularly during periods of adversity. He underscored the profound historical ties between the two nations and articulated the importance of fostering robust cooperation and the reciprocal exchange of expertise. The Mayor highlighted the value of learning from each other’s experiences, given that both countries have navigated similar complex transitions and reconstruction phases.
Ambassador Alsanuusi expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm reception extended by the Mayor. He affirmed Libya’s dedication to strengthening the bilateral relationship and committed to actively working towards the full realization of the cooperation agreements. The Ambassador proposed a series of reciprocal visits between the mayors of Mogadishu and Tripoli. Such exchanges, he suggested, would be instrumental in forging closer bonds and collaboratively advancing joint development efforts, thereby serving the mutual interests of both capital cities and their populations.
This engagement signals a renewed push to leverage diplomatic channels for tangible urban development outcomes. By reactivating and expanding cooperation frameworks, Mogadishu and Tripoli seek to harness collective experiences to address modern urban challenges, foster economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for their citizens. The dialogue sets a positive precedent for future collaborative initiatives that aim to build on historical solidarity to achieve contemporary progress.
