Mogadishu Mayor Donates $200,000 to Support Drought Relief Efforts in Awdal Region

Mogadishu, August 3, 2025 – The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), has donated $200,000 to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) to support emergency drought relief efforts in the Awdal region, located in northwestern Somalia.

Mayor Muungaab described the contribution as the beginning of broader support from Banadir Region toward communities affected by drought in Awdal. He emphasized that the funds were sourced from taxes paid by residents of the capital—underscoring Mogadishu’s role as a unifying center for all Somalis, including those from Awdal.

He called on humanitarian organizations and the broader Somali public to rally in support of fellow citizens suffering the devastating effects of drought in Awdal and other regions.

SODMA Commissioner Mahamud Macalin expressed gratitude to Mayor Muungaab for his swift and meaningful response, noting that the financial aid would be urgently delivered to the intended beneficiaries.

Also present at the handover were Federal Minister of Public Works and Housing Dr. Elmi Mahmoud Nur, State Minister for Internal Security Mohamed Ali Hagaa, and Member of Parliament Asha Koos—who hails from the Awdal region. They all commended the Banadir Regional Administration for stepping forward at a critical time to assist drought-affected communities.
