Mogadishu Mayor Addresses New Vehicle Registration System Amid Public Drivers’ Protest

Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), on Wednesday addressed a protest staged earlier in the day by some public transport drivers, who raised concerns over a newly introduced vehicle registration system aimed at strengthening overall security in the capital.

Mayor Muungaab said it is essential to register every vehicle operating in Mogadishu to ensure comprehensive records are available, including details of the vehicle, its owner, guarantor, and operating staff such as the driver and assistant (conductor).

He explained that the measure is part of broader efforts to enhance security and ensure the safety of citizens.

The mayor firmly denied reports claiming that additional fees would be imposed on drivers or vehicle owners, clarifying that no charges will be collected beyond the existing official terminal (Bosteejo) fee.

He also warned that vehicles failing to comply with the registration process and established regulations would face legal action in accordance with national laws.

The remarks were delivered in the presence of senior officials, including the Banadir Regional Commander of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), who underscored the importance of implementing the new system as a key step toward improving security in Mogadishu.
