Mogadishu, SONNA – In a solemn yet inspiring ceremony held on Wednesday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led the nation in commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Somali Youth League (SYL), a pivotal movement in Somalia’s history. The president paid homage to the legacy of the SYL by laying flowers at the iconic SYL monument in the heart of Mogadishu, symbolizing respect and remembrance for the forebearers of Somali independence.

The Somali Youth League, originally established as the Somali Youth Club, holds the distinction of being Somalia’s inaugural political party. Its inception marked the beginning of a relentless struggle for sovereignty, which spanned the 1940s to the 1960s, culminating in the nation’s eventual independence.

Addressing a gathering of citizens, President Mohamud delivered a stirring speech, urging the youth of Somalia to draw inspiration from the SYL’s indomitable spirit. He emphasized the importance of unity, mobilization, and active political participation as essential tools for shaping Somalia’s destiny.

“The SYL’s journey is a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring strength of our national identity,” stated President Mohamud. “Today, as we honor their memory, let us also ignite the same fervor within ourselves to carry forward the torch of progress and prosperity.”

The president’s call to action resonated with the youth, who are seen as the cornerstone for fostering change and driving Somalia towards a brighter future. The commemoration serves not only as a reflection of the past but also as a clarion call for the youth to become architects of their own fate.

As the nation reflects on the sacrifices made by the SYL, the message is clear: the path to a thriving Somalia is paved with the participation and passion of its youth. The 81st anniversary of the SYL stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring a new generation to rise and contribute to the nation’s ongoing narrative of resilience and renewal.
