MOGADISHU, SONNA – The Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, H.E. Ali Yusuf Ali-Hosh, has warned of the growing dangers posed by the misuse of social media in Somalia, stressing that irresponsible online behavior is fueling division, spreading falsehoods, and threatening national cohesion.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with Somali cultural elders at the Ministry headquarters, Minister Ali Hosh said social media platforms are increasingly being used by individuals and groups in ways that undermine peace and stability.
“There are an increasing number of individuals and organized groups that are supposed to be law-abiding who are using social media in wrong ways, such as to divide the people, to undermine national unity, to spread malicious news, to spread lies and to incite public opinion,” the Minister stated.
He emphasized that Somali culture and traditional leadership remain a cornerstone in safeguarding unity and social order, urging elders to take the lead in raising awareness against harmful online practices.
“Somali culture is an important pillar, which is the leadership of the Somali people, their role is great, they must use their wisdom to prevent the dangers of the misuse of social media, and to encourage good,” he said.
The Minister cautioned that the deliberate spread of misinformation and provocative content online can easily escalate into clan disputes, instability, and wider security crises, while also causing psychological harm to Somali youth.
In his concluding remarks, Minister Ali Hosh urged the public to remain vigilant, resist attempts by extremists to exploit communities, and work collectively to stop the spread of harmful narratives.
