Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Governor of Banaadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, H.E. Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), participated in a public awareness session on voter registration held in Yaqshid District, aimed at promoting direct elections and strengthening Somalia’s democratic transition.
The meeting focused on the critical importance of citizen registration as a foundation for democratic governance and the realization of the Somali people’s right to choose their leaders. The initiative is part of a broader national agenda to return political power to the public through free and fair elections.
In his remarks, Mayor Muungaab emphasized that Mogadishu’s future lies in the hands of its people and reiterated the capital’s rightful claim to equal status with other Federal Member States. He urged citizens to turn out in large numbers to register and participate in the upcoming district council elections, which he described as a milestone toward representative local governance.
The Mayor also welcomed the national reconciliation initiative launched by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, calling on residents to safeguard the ongoing progress and security in Mogadishu. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation with security agencies and expressed strong support for the fight against Al-Shabaab, led by the Somali National Army and community-based forces.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor for Security and Politics of Banaadir Region, Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Diriye (Yabooh), the District Commissioner of Yaqshid, Members of Parliament, political figures, traditional elders, religious scholars, educators, women’s groups, youth representatives, and various community stakeholders.
