Mogadishu (SONNA) — The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hon. Daud Aweis Jama, has extended warm congratulations to the Somali people, particularly media professionals, on the occasion of Somali Media Day, which commemorates the historic beginning of journalism and the introduction of written Somali.
The Minister noted that the day holds special significance for the Somali nation, as it marks the publication of the first Somali newspaper, which played a pivotal role in spreading knowledge, raising public awareness, and shaping collective thought. The occasion also commemorates the start of written Somali, which laid the foundation for the growth of media, education, and social cohesion across the country.
Hon. Daud Aweis Jama emphasized the indispensable role Somali media has played in defending national sovereignty, fostering unity, disseminating truth, and combating misinformation. He underscored that a responsible and professional press remains a cornerstone of democracy, accountability, and state-building.
The Minister called on media practitioners to further strengthen journalistic ethics, fact-checking, and service to the public interest, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting freedom of expression, enhancing media professionalism, and ensuring the safety and protection of journalists.
The Minister wished all journalists, writers, editors, and media professionals continued success, progress, and unity, stating that Somali Media Day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s media history and to work collectively toward a transparent, informative, and people-centered media landscape that truly represents the interests of the Somali public.
