Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Daud Aweis Jama received the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, H.E. Wang Yu, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mogadishu.
The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the fields of culture and media, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding the long-standing ties between the two nations.
As part of the visit, the Minister and the Ambassador jointly toured the National Audio Archive of Radio Mogadishu, where experts briefed them on the current state of the archives and the Ministry’s plans to digitize and modernize the collection.
The delegation also visited the National Theatre (Golaha Murtida iyo Madaddaalada), where they were warmly welcomed by members of the Waaberi National Band, led by the Acting Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Maki Haji Banadir.
The visit was part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the historic venue, which serves as a key hub for cultural expression, artistic development, public awareness, and community engagement. During the visit, the Waaberi Band performed Somali and Chinese songs, as well as traditional dances, symbolizing cultural unity.
Minister Daud Aweis expressed gratitude to Ambassador Wang Yu for his visit and China’s continued support, especially in the fields of culture and media. He noted that this year marks 65 years of diplomatic friendship between Somalia and China.
“Somalia and China share deep-rooted ties that date back to our independence. We deeply value China’s unwavering support, particularly in preserving and promoting our cultural and media institutions,” said the Minister.
Ambassador Wang Yu praised the National Theatre and the cultural performance, stating that China is committed to strengthening its cooperation with Somalia in cultural development. He described the theatre as a national symbol of Somalia’s rich heritage.
To mark the occasion, Minister Aweis presented the Ambassador with two hand-drawn artworks prepared by the Waaberi Arts Department — one of which depicted the recent meeting between the Presidents of Somalia and China in Beijing.
The Minister was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry, including Director General Mr. Abdullahi Hayir Ducaale, Director of Media Strategy Mr. Abdishakur Ali Ahmed, and Director of Somali National Television, Mr. Mohamedkafi Sheikh Abukar.
