Kampala, Uganda (SONNA) – A major conference on the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) is currently underway in Kampala, Uganda, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss Somalia’s security and stabilization efforts. The Somali delegation is led by Minister of Defense Jabriil Abdirashid Haji Abdi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar (Ali Balcad), and Somalia’s Ambassador to Uganda Fardowsa Mohamed Qanyare. The meeting has drawn participation from troop-contributing nations including Uganda, Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, as well as representatives from the African Union, European Union, and United Nations.

The conference, which began with technical-level discussions on Tuesday, moved to ministerial-level talks on Wednesday. Key agenda items focus on strengthening support for Somalia’s Federal Government and enhancing the effectiveness of the AUSSOM mission. Minister of Defense Jabriil Abdirashid emphasized the importance of the gathering, stating that it demonstrates the international community’s shared commitment to Somalia’s stability. Ambassador Qanyare highlighted the significance of regional cooperation, noting Uganda’s role as host reflects the region’s dedication to collective security.

Participants are expected to reach important decisions regarding increased logistical and operational support for AUSSOM forces, better coordination between international partners and the Somali government, and alignment of regional efforts with Somalia’s security transition plans. The presence of high-level AU, EU, and UN officials shows the global importance of Somalia’s stabilization process. An AU official present at the conference remarked that “Somalia’s security is Africa’s security,” emphasizing the mission’s critical role in ensuring lasting peace in the Horn of Africa region.

The conference comes at a crucial time as Somalia continues its fight against insurgency while working to strengthen state institutions. Final outcomes from the ministerial sessions are expected to include renewed commitments of troop support and funding to sustain AUSSOM’s operations. Observers note the meeting represents a significant step in shaping the future international support structure for Somalia as it progresses in its stabilization efforts. The decisions made in Kampala will likely influence the next phase of international engagement with Somalia’s security sector, particularly as the country works towards assuming full responsibility for its national security.
