G7 Foreign Ministers Urge Dialogue and Support for Somalia Amid Regional Challenges

In a recent gathering on the picturesque island of Capri, G7 foreign ministers concluded their third day of discussions, addressing pressing global issues and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now in its third year. A significant portion of their dialogue focused on the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia, where they reiterated their unwavering commitment to fostering peace, security, and stability.

Humanitarian Efforts and Concerns The G7 nations have pledged continued humanitarian assistance to those in the Horn of Africa who are grappling with food scarcity, poverty, violence, and the repercussions of severe weather and displacement. This support underscores the group’s dedication to alleviating the region’s humanitarian crises.

Memorandum of Understanding: A Call for Open Dialogue The ministers voiced their apprehension over the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Ethiopia and the region of Somaliland in Somalia this past January. The G7 urges both the Ethiopian government and the Federal Government of Somalia to maintain open communication channels. They emphasize the importance of dialogue to avert further tensions, urging cooperation with regional allies, adherence to international law, and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as outlined in the UN Charter.

Praise for Somalia’s Progress The G7 commended Somalia for its significant strides in institutional building, economic management, and security reforms. They encouraged Somali authorities to persist in their efforts against Al Shabaab and to push forward with institutional development, including the completion of a transparent and inclusive constitutional reform.

Security Transition and Future Planning With the mandate of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) set to conclude at the end of 2024, the G7 highlighted the critical need to monitor the handover of security duties to Somali forces. They welcomed ongoing plans by Somalia and the African Union to establish a multinational mission to succeed ATMIS, aiming to sustain stability as Somalia enhances its security infrastructure.
