Nairobi, Kenya, SONNA – Negotiations between the Federal Republic of Somalia and East African Community (EAC) have entered their second day. The talks come after Somalia completed the vetting process to join the EAC and are scheduled to last until August 31st.

Both teams are actively engaged in discussions on a range of topics, including Political, Legal and Institutional; Infrastructure, Productive and Social Sectors; and Economic and Trade Affairs clusters. Joining the EAC would enable Somalia to benefit from the EAC’s regional infrastructure projects, such as roads, railways, and energy networks. These projects aim to improve connectivity and ultimately support Somalia’s economic development.

Peter Mathuki, Secretary-General of the EAC, stated at the launch of the negotiations that “Joining the EAC would enable Somalia to benefit from the EAC’s regional infrastructure projects, such as roads, railways, & energy networks. These projects aim to improve connectivity & ultimately supporting Somalia’s economic development.”

The negotiations aim to strengthen cooperation between the EAC and Somalia, with a focus on promoting sustainable development and regional integration.

As the negotiations continue, both teams remain committed to finding common ground and reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. The outcome of the talks is eagerly anticipated by all those invested in the future of the EAC and Somalia.
