Federal Government of Somalia’s Weekly Briefing

Mogadishu, Friday, 12th January, 2024

1-            Thousands of people living in Mogadishu attended massive protests against Ethiopia’s encroachment on Somalia’s sovereignty and territory, following Addis Ababa’s move of signing unlawful agreement with the Somaliland administration in northern Somalia.

2-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is in the midst of Somalia’s diplomatic efforts to express its strong opposition to Ethiopia’s aggression, has held meetings with the European Union representative in the Horn of Africa and the Chinese ambassador to Somalia.

3-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received an invitation from his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fatah El-Sisi.

4-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held extensive talks on regional matters in Asmara with the Eritrean President, Isais Afwerki.

5-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed a law to nullify the illegal agreement between Ethiopia and the Somaliland administration in northern Somalia.

6-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres have held a telephone conversation and addressed the concerning issue of Ethiopia’s encroachment on Somalia’s sovereignty, emphasizing the potential threats to global stability.

7-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, where he spoke with commanders, officers and the Somali National Army.

8-            The United States, Britain, the Republic of Djibouti, Sudan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and China have become the latest countries to support Somalia, noting the importance of preserving the independence, nationalism and territorial unity of Somalia, after Ethiopia’s aggressive action against Somalia.

9-            President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterated that he will never compromise on an inch of Somali territory, pointing out the importance of everyone’s duty to protect the land, honor and dignity of the country.

10-         President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has praised the Somali people for standing with the government defending the territory and the sovereignty of the Republic of Somalia.

11-         President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud spoke on the phone with the President of Turkey Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and thanked the people and the government of Turkey for the support shown following the interference and violation of the independence and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia by Ethiopia.

12-         President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud spoke on the phone with the Vice President of the European Union and the Head of Political and Security Affairs, Mr. Josep Borrell, thanking him for the EU strong stance on the unity and independence of Somalia.

13-         President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre have congratulated Mr. Said Abdullahi Deni who has been re-elected as the President of Puntland State for the next 5 years.

14-         Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has held talks in Mogadishu with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Somalia, Mr. Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al-Muwalad , focusing on the strengthening of cooperative relations between the two brotherly countries.

15-         Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has condoled the death of the late Major Abdi Mohamed Sheikh Hassan (Sulnuug) who was the commander of the 18th GorGor Brigade of the Somali National Army. He was martyred in the righteous war to eradicate the Kharijites Al Shabab.

16-         Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, has opened the new Islamic Law and Studies Institute, saying the institute is supposed to produce religious scholars who guide the society on the right path as prescribed by Sharia.

17-         The Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama said that Ethiopia’s greed and intervention in Somalia’s affairs have generated a new sense of unity among the Somali people.

18-         The IGAD Regional Body has announced an extraordinary summit in Uganda to discuss Ethiopia’s interference in Somalia’s sovereignty.

19-         The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hussein Ibrahim Daha said the organization opposes Ethiopia’s action of violating Somalia sovereignty after signing an unlawful deal with Somaliland region of Somalia.

20-         The Federal Government of Somalia has requested an urgent meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Arab League to discuss Ethiopia’s violation of Somalia’s independence and sovereignty.

21-         The ambassador of Somalia in Kenya Amb Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle has briefed ambassadors of the member countries of the Arab League in Nairobi about the current situation in the region following Ethiopia’s action of violating Somalia sovereignty.

22-         The people of Borame town in the Awdal region of Northern Somalia staged a massive protest against Ethiopia’s desire to violate the sovereignty and independence of Somalia.

23-         Thousands of people who are unhappy with Ethiopia’s intervention gathered in the city of Burco, the capital of Togdheer Region.

24-         The traditional elders of Saylac district in Awdal region strongly opposed the illegal agreement that Ethiopia entered into with Somaliland.

25-         The people of Warsheekh District in the Middle Shabelle Region have staged a demonstration against Ethiopia’s intervention in Somalia’s independence.

26-         The Federal Government of Somalia has said that it is very disappointed and concerned for the insidious actions of the Somaliland administration trying to silence the media and the people of the northern regions of the country who are protesting Ethiopia’s interference in the sovereignty of Somalia.

27-         Some members of the Kenyan Parliament have condemned Ethiopia’s violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

28-         The ministers and members of the two Houses of the Somali Parliament from Awdal region have openly opposed Ethiopia’s interference in Somalia’s independence.

29-         The Minister of Health of Somalia Dr. Ali Haji Adan had a meeting with the Chancellor of the Somali National University, Prof. Hassan Osman Ga’al  focusing on strengthening the country’s general health system and developing health research.

30-         The Minister of Information of Somalia Mr. Daud Aweis Jama congratulated the staff and the management of the Somali News Agency SONNA who turned 60 years old.

31-         The National Army, with the help of international friends, have killed 26 Kharijites Al Shabab conspirators, including the leader of the group, in an airstrike in Jejex area in the south of Mudug region.

32-         The National Security and Intelligence Agency (NISA) has arrested a network of Kharijites al-Shabaab in Beledweyne city of Hiran region who wanted to cross into Galgaduud region.

33-         The Minister of Defense of Somaliland administration, Abdiqani Aateeye, has resigned from his position, in opposition to the illegal agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland administration.
