Federal Government of Somalia’s Weekly Briefing

Mogadishu, Wednesday, 17 May, 2023

1- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to meet with Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha today.

2- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the cabinet resolution on the financial managementand the fight against corruption.

3- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has bid farewell to units of the Somali National Army in Mogadishu who are going to take part in the second phase of the war to liberate the country from the Kharijites Al Shabab.

4- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired the high-level meeting of the National Economic Council, which discussed issues such as the country’s development policy and the acceleration of national economic recovery programs.

5- The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, urged the youth to play a major role in the country’s politics, while speaking at the Youth Day celebration on May 15.

6- The President of the Federal Republic, Speakers of House of the People and Senate, Prime Minister and other government officials congratulated the Somali youth on May 15 Youth Day.

7- The Cabinet has passed the Resolution on Strengthening the Transparency of Financial Management in the country.

8- Prime MinisterHamse Abdi Barre, has appointed the Commission for Census, Restoration, Evaluation and Recommendation on the Regulation of National Assets.

9- Prime Minister Hamsa Abi Barre held a farewell meeting with the Deputy Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, whose term in the country has come to an end.

10- The Disaster Management Agency is visiting to assess the damage caused by the flooding of the Shabelle River in the city of Beled Weyne in Hiran Region.

11- The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Daud Aweis Jama briefed the Acting Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Somalia, Ms. Anita Kiki Gbheho, on the political situation, security, stabilization, development programs and the floods caused by Shabelle River.

12- The Minister of Trade and Industries of Somalia, Mr. Jibril Abdirashid Haji, has officially launched the product quality control program to check their quality before import and clearance.

13- Somalia’s Minister of Finance Dr. Elmi Mohamud Noor has briefed the annual meeting of the Islamic Development Bank on the efforts of the Somali Government to rebuild and improve the financial system of the country which is currently in a good shape.

14- The Somali National Army has killed and wounded members of the Khawarij al-Shabab, after they attacked the terrorist hideouts in central Somalia.

15- In a planned operation carried out by the National Intelligence and Security Forces and international partners in Kurtun Warey District in the Lower Shabelle Region, 44 members of the Kharijites al-Shabab were killed, including leaders and militias.

16- Somalia’s Minister of Finance Dr. Elmi Mohamud Noor and the Director General of the Saudi Arabian Development Fund jointly signed an agreement to restructure the Fund’s debts to Somalia.

17- The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Somalia Mr. Hassan Moalim said that the government is committed to the fight against corruption, and strong measures are being taken to eradicate it from the country.

18- The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has received the diplomatic credentials from the new British Ambassador to Somalia, Amb. Michael Nithavrianakis.

19- The Special Envoy of the President of Somalia in charge of Drought Emergency Md. MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame participated in an international conference in Switzerland to find a solution for people displaced by drought, conflicts and food shortages.

20- The Somali National Army has carried out an operation in Aw Dheegle District of the Lower Shabelle Region killing 5 members of the Khawarij al-Shabaab.

21- The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Honorable Hassan Macallin Mohamud, inaugurated the third batch of notary licensing exams for 142 lawyers.

22- The Auditor-General, Ahmed Ise Gutale, has signed a tripartite technical cooperation agreement between the Office of the Auditor-General, the INTOSAI Development Agency (IDI) and the Association of English-speaking African Audit Institutions ( AFROSAI-E).

23- The Special Envoy of the President in charge of Immigration and Children’s Rights, Mary Yasin Haji Yusuf, who participated in a conference on migration organized by the European Union.

24- The Attorney General’s Office has filed a case against a foreign company called AUMOTAIVTE MANAGEMENT SERVICE to the Banadir Regional Court for money laundering and tax evasion.

25- Somalia and Kenya agreed to open the border between the two countries and strengthen cooperation between the two countries such as trade, security cooperation and aviation.

26- The Minister of Petroleum and Minerals of the Federal Government of Somalia, Dr. Abdirizak Omar Mohamed has participated in the African Energy and Fuel Conference in London.

27- The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Abshir Omar Huruse arrived in the city of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to participate in the preparatory meeting of Arab League Summit.
