Mogadishu (SONNA): – Djibouti, the current chair of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has announced that it will convene an extraordinary summit on the ongoing crisis between Ethiopia and Somalia and the situation in Sudan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti said in a statement that the summit was called by President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who is also the chair of IGAD, and will be hosted by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda on 18 January 2024.
The statement said that the summit will address two main issues: the escalating tension between Ethiopia and Somalia over the Somali Sea and the Ethiopian deal with Somaliland, and the political and security challenges in Sudan.
The statement added that the official invitations will be sent to all IGAD member states, the African Union and international partners through diplomatic channels, and requested the IGAD Secretariat in Djibouti to coordinate with the Ugandan authorities for the organization of the summit.
The statement reaffirmed Djibouti’s commitment to the principles of good neighbourliness and regional cooperation, and expressed its hope for a peaceful and stable resolution of the conflicts in the region.
