Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The people of the capital of Mogadishu and the country in general are preparing to commemorate the celebrations of the 64th National Week, which includes the independence of the northern and southern regions and the unity of the two parts of the country.

Celebrations are filled in the air in the whole country particularly in the capital for the independence and the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 26th of June, marks the Independence Day of the country’s northern regions.

Preparations for the National Week celebrations began at the beginning of this week in order to commemorate the first occasion of the National Week, which represents the independence of the northern regions, which gained their freedom on June 26, 1960. The celebrations will continue until the first of July, which represents the independence of the southern regions and the unity of the two parts of the country.

National Week represents for Somalis inside and outside the country a great week full of glorious and life long occasions in the souls, and that is why citizens are keen to prepare early to commemorate this great anniversary.

Major celebrations are held throughout the country and abroad by communities residing in major international cities, during which various activities include national anthems, dance performances, and plays that express the place of independence in the hearts of the Somali people.

The preparations include people wearing clothes designed in the colors of the national flag, and decorating homes, government headquarters, cars, streets, shops, and parks with the national flag, to celebrate this glorious week.

Preparations also include repainting the features of memorial statues of the nation’s heroes, restoring street walls and decorating them with the national flag and patriotic phrases.

Due to the importance and value of this occasion, the federal government was keen to appoint a committee charged with organizing celebrations for this occasion.

The committee consists of ministers in the government, Banadir Governorate, and leaders of the security services who are working intensively to prepare the special plan for organizing celebrations during National Week.

The 64th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Somalia comes this year, amid many achievements achieved by the federal government, most notably successive victories in military operations to eliminate the remnants of the terrorist Kharijite militias of the Al-Shabaab, relief from foreign debts, lifting the arms embargo, and joining the East African Community.

This year, National Week also comes amid an atmosphere of hope and optimism in the hearts of the Somali people regarding holding elections with a one-per system in order for citizens to choose who will represent them in power.
