MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia held its weekly meeting today, presided over by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. The session resulted in the approval of a significant legislative package, including amendments to the Central Bank Law and the endorsement of the National Defense Bill, aimed at modernizing the country’s financial governance and security architecture.
In a move to strengthen the national financial system and enhance institutional transparency, the Cabinet voted to approve amendments to the Central Bank of Somalia Law. Additionally, the council passed the Somali Seafarer’s Discharge Book Regulation, a measure designed to regulate maritime employment and documentation in line with international standards.
The session also prioritized social development and human rights, with the ministers approving the Children’s Rights Bill and the Family Affairs Bill. Furthermore, the Cabinet endorsed the policy and regulation for the National Education Development Fund (NEDF), seeking to secure sustainable funding for the advancement of the education sector.
A major focus of the meeting was the upcoming local council elections in the Benadir region, scheduled for later this month. The Minister of Interior presented a comprehensive report on the preparations for the vote. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre commended the cabinet members for their active engagement with the public during the election campaign, emphasizing that close integration between the government and the citizens is essential for effective governance.
