Mogadishu, Somalia – July 18, 2025 – Brigadier General Marco Manzone officially took command of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S) today, succeeding Brigadier General Giuseppe Zizzari. The change of command ceremony, a significant event symbolizing continuity and renewed commitment, took place at the International Campus in Mogadishu.

The solemn occasion was overseen by Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan, Director General of the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC), highlighting the strategic importance of EUTM-S within the European Union’s broader security initiatives. The ceremony also served as a powerful affirmation of the strong partnership between the European Union and Somalia in the critical areas of security and defense. Dignitaries present included representatives from various international partners, as well as high-ranking Somali military and civilian authorities, notably the Somali Minister of Defence, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.

In his farewell address, Brigadier General Zizzari reflected with pride on his tenure, emphasizing the mission’s foundational values: professionalism, teamwork, and unwavering dedication. He articulated EUTM-S’s crucial role in fostering stability, promoting good governance, and enhancing security within Somalia. Brigadier General Zizzari extended his sincere gratitude to the European Union for its consistent commitment, acknowledging the vital contributions of international partners, Somali authorities, and the diligent military and civilian personnel of EUTM Somalia. He noted their collective efforts were instrumental to the mission’s ongoing progress, concluding by expressing confidence in the mission’s future success and extending best wishes to Brigadier General Manzone. He departed with a profound sense of fulfillment derived from the experiences and relationships cultivated during his service.

Assuming his new role, Brigadier General Manzone delivered an inaugural speech affirming Europe’s steadfast commitment to Somali sovereignty and stability. “We represent a shared European purpose,” he stated, conveying confidence in achieving common objectives through close collaboration with both Somali and international partners, all within a robust political and diplomatic framework.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedicated service, Brigadier General Zizzari was awarded the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Medal for Extraordinary Meritorious Service.

EUTM-Somalia, established in 2010, is a truly multinational endeavor, comprising military staff from various European nations including Italy, Greece, Finland, France, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Moldova, Hungary, and Serbia. The mission’s core objective remains to train and advise the Somali Security Forces, thereby contributing significantly to the country’s long-term security and institutional development. The change of command marks a seamless transition, ensuring the mission continues its vital work in supporting Somalia’s journey towards lasting peace and stability.
