Mogadishu, Somalia – November 24, 2024: The Cabinet of the Federal Government of Somalia convened a special meeting tonight, chaired by Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre, to address critical issues concerning the Jubbaland Regional State. The meeting culminated in a landmark resolution regarding the legality of recent electoral processes in the region.
The Cabinet’s deliberations were guided by the country’s Interim Constitution, particularly Articles 4, 99, and 100, alongside Law No. 24, which amends certain constitutional articles. The Cabinet announced pivotal decisions, asserting that the selection of members of the House of Representatives and the election of the former leader of Jubbaland, Ahmed Mohamed Islaan (Ahmed Madoobe), were conducted in violation of national laws, specifically Law No. 24 issued in March 2024.
The Council of Ministers unequivocally declared that all actions related to the illegal elections in Jubbaland, including the appointment of the electoral commission, were not in compliance with the legal framework of the country.
In an effort to rectify the situation, the Council of Ministers has directed the Attorney General to immediately file a case before the Supreme Court of Somalia. This legal action aims to address the unlawful activities orchestrated by the former leader of Jubbaland, reinforcing the government’s dedication to justice and constitutional governance.
Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre emphasized the importance of adhering to the legal and constitutional provisions that govern the nation. “Our commitment to the rule of law is resolute. The actions taken today reflect our determination to uphold democratic principles and ensure that all electoral processes are conducted in accordance with the law,” he stated.
This resolution marks a critical juncture for Jubbaland and the broader political landscape of Somalia. By taking a firm stand against illegal electoral practices, the Federal Government of Somalia aims to foster a transparent and accountable governance system, setting a precedent for future electoral processes across the country.
The swift and decisive actions of the Cabinet highlight the government’s resolve to address irregularities and reinforce the principles of democracy and justice.
