Mogadishu(SONNA)- Preparations are in full swing across Benadir Region as voter card distribution continues in most districts, ahead of Somalia’s first local elections in 57 years. Every day, thousands of residents line up at registration centers to collect their voter cards, marking a significant step toward the long-awaited polls now rescheduled for 25 December 2025.
A Historic Opportunity for Mogadishu Residents
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud described the upcoming elections as a “historic opportunity” for citizens of the capital to choose their representatives in local councils. He encouraged young people in particular to engage actively in political organizations competing in the elections, stressing the importance of their role in shaping the future of local governance.
Political Campaigns Intensify Across the Capital
In recent weeks, Mogadishu has witnessed an increase in political activity, as organizers from various political groups visit neighborhoods, public areas, and marketplaces to meet registered voters.
Approximately one million voters are expected to participate in the polls.
Several political parties — including the Justice and Solidarity Party, Tawfiq Political Party, People’s Party, Ramas Party, and Dalsan Party — have launched field campaigns aimed at earning public support and presenting their proposals for improving community services across Benadir’s districts.
Strong Turnout at Registration Centers
Meanwhile, voter registration centers in Mogadishu continue to issue cards from early morning hours. Long, orderly queues were reported in multiple neighborhoods, accompanied by organized security measures to ensure a smooth distribution process.
The National Electoral Commission said the process is progressing “according to plan,” urging eligible voters to collect their cards within the designated timeframe to avoid congestion as election day approaches.
A Milestone for Local Governance
The upcoming elections represent a major step toward strengthening local governance in Somalia, offering residents of the capital a direct voice in selecting district administrators and shaping service delivery in their communities.
With growing voter turnout and an active campaign environment, the capital is moving steadily toward 25 December, a date expected to mark the most significant democratic milestone in Mogadishu in over half a century.
